Review: Artistry goes beyond skin-deep in Gallery X show, ‘Clothing Optional’

Stephanie Sherman’s oil, “Portrait of the Artist as Wonder Woman,” at first glance, seems to present an odd visual dichotomy within itself. Part of the painting is rendered in a traditional “realistic” manner, with her short-cropped hair sporting a golden tiara, a crisp white shirt and her arms akimbo, but then it shifts to a 1960s comic book look, an explosion of primary colors. It is initially jarring, until the eyes adjust and realize that the familiar Wonder Woman costume is printed on the black apron that she wears.
